Tavira is a Portuguese town, located in Algarve. In it you will discover the Ria Formosa Natural Park, an extensive stretch of sand over 50 km in length, where there are several beaches, abundant fauna, dunes, and other special flora. This natural park has an interpretation center that has lots of information to inform the curious visitor. For example, information on the variety of birds that pass through this place on their migration path. Around this area you will find camping grounds where you can stay and enjoy the nature that surrounds you.
This park is made up of 5 small islands, and on the peninsular part, the land changes drastically, depending on the tides, which makes these wetlands an ideal resting spot for thousands of migratory birds every year.
Cancela Velha and Tavira are the two towns in which this natural park resides, as well as the Ancao Peninsula, and more than 17,800 hectars of wetland of which you can observe on a hike or on bicycle.
In this natural park, the wetlands are mostly located in Quinta Do Marin, about a kilometer from Olhao, where you will also see water mills in the sea and an interpretation center. This is also the location of the ancient Roman salt plantations, that are a testimony to the past, showing that tuna was a very important substance in this region during that time. |
